Tokelau is a small group of tropical coral atolls in the South Pacific. Tokelau, formerly known as the Tokelau Islands, are a non-self-governing territory as defined by the United Nations. Tokelau is administered by New Zealand.
Tokelau has a population of about 1400; about 5000 ex-patriots live in New Zealand, the result of migration that started in the 1960's. Its total land area is about 2500 acres, or about four square miles. The three atolls are named, from west to east, Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo. Each is approximately 60 miles from the other, stretching in a line pointing south east. UN reports warn that if sea levels continue rising, the islands themselves will disappear.
Tokelau has no air-strip access. All access is by boat, after a 30-hour sail from American Samoa (the nearest air access is in Apia, Samoa).
According to the atoll's web site, Fakaofo defeated the other two atoll in war and is considered the "chiefly island." However, Nukunonu is the only island with hotel facilities.
In February 2006, Tokelau held a referendum to determine if it should work towards independence. The vote required a two-thirds majority to pursue independence, but only 60% of the votes were in favor.
